Wouxun KG-905G GMRS Two Way Radio

I love these KG 905 radio's, I have 4, aslo have a KG1000G Plus used as a base station, works excellent.

Great, chunky, water resistant radio that I put in my kids hands and send them into the neighborhood. Very happy with.

Great little radio.. love the quality feel.. nice strong build quality. Audio is great.. screens nice and bright.. programming was easy.. my only compaint and honestly they are no different than almost all other radios out there cause they all do it.. but it bothers me more on gmrs specific radios because they have such a small band to work with and that is their failure to meet their advertised output wattage.. this one comes in at 3.7 watts on repeater channel R15.. now why claim to be a 5 watt if you're not 5 watts.. before you ask.. I tested on simplex and duplex and the best I could get was 3.9 just shy of 4 watts.. which would you notice that 1 watt difference? NO but it just annoys me cause they have such a small band to work with there's no reason not to get it right.. I understand multi band radios with 2m 70 cm that I'm using for gmrs cause I'm not using them for their intended purpose... but this one I am and it still isn't right.
But overall I have decided to overlook the wattage issue cause the other features and build quality makes up it

Very difficult to turn the two dial knobs. Will likely return for refund. Meant to order the 935. But do not expect the 935 to be any better.

I purchased this 905G to complete a pair, as I was very impressed with the first radio. I like the simple interface and the clean lines. It is solid, very well built, and has excellent transmit and receive audio and range.

My only (minor) criticism is that it may be a little too easy to inadvertently activate the PTT button while manipulating the radio, but that goes away when you get used to handling it. So maybe 4.5 stars….

I have purchased a few radios and accessories from Buy Two Way Radios and they have always been great to deal with. It took a long time for this radio to arrive but in spite of delivery issues this GMRS radio is great and fit the bill for simplicity and performance. After I programmed it I lift our local repeaters I gave it to my grandson so he could call me whenever he desired. The radio works great and is well built with good sound in transcribing and receiving.

I am not a GMRS expert. I bought this as a companion to my Wouxun 20 watt GMRS radio. This is compact, powerful, has a good speaker, and long battery life. I haven't used it a lot yet, but it seems easy to use. programming in sub channels is easy, as well. Buy Two Way Radios provided fast shipping and the website was easy to use.

Pretty much bought this because I needed a reliable, water resistant, handheld GMRS within a certain budget, and NotaRubicon from Youtube recommended it, Being from Canada tho our options are cheap 2watt "bubble-wrap" radios from Canadian tire, which pretty run on FRS rules, but on GMRS frequencies.
Warning for Canadians I payed a hefty $102 IMPORT fee that was NOT in the budget, RIP.

I have a few small complaints and 1 thing that really bothers me, but what i like about the radio are;
The alleged 5 watt transmission power is excellent, it comes out clear and strong and the reception is spot on. Someone I was with was hearing only static on their radio but I could hear the other people clear as day.
I LOVE the channel knob, and use when changing channels, it's super intuitive and the tactile feedback is great. The radio is hefty, solid and rugged, and the mic port is well sealed against water and dust, tho requires a coin or flat-head to access, not a con imo. Both the stock and spare battery came with a USB-C charging port, greatly appreciated. The customizable PF1 and PF2 buttons are pretty cool.

I had to turn the roger beep off because I usually have it at max or near-max volume and the roger beep from the speaker is tremendous! I don't know why it needs to be SO loud.
The menu navigation is very un-intuitive, you use the down arrow to move up and the up arrow to move down. I understand that up means up from 1 to 2 to 3 etc, but am constantly going in the wrong direction.
The software is a mess, it works, but is very slow and unresponsive, looks like it should run on windows 98' fr fr, however im grateful they do have one, really wish i could fit more than 6 characters for the channels names and custom messages.
By far my biggest complaint is when using the scan feature; when the radio stops on a channel with activity and you stop the scanning it will NOT stop on the active channel, it will revert back to whichever channel you were on when you started scanning, forcing you to scroll through all the channels to get to the active channel. This may not be an issue if you just scanning 16 channels but if you have several repeaters or several groups with different channel privacy tones it could take a while to get back to that channel.
Anyways great radio, don't import from Canada that was a poor decision.

This easy to program radio is built like a tank. Great clear sound. Great buy!

This is my third Wouxum radio from Buytwowayradios. Very fast delivery. My latest radio purchase is theKG-905G handheld radio. This radio is powerful and easy to program without a computer. All my Wouxum radios have been easily programmed using the radio itself. A Nagoya 771g antenna has more gain than the rubber duck antenna and is an improvement both on reception and transmission. This radio is another fine product from Wouxum.

I have bought 2 KG-935’s and now 6 KG-905’s so far for summer camp activities. All of them have worked fine and ordering through buytwowayradios was fast and easy. Everything arrived well packed and in excellent condition.

Just purchased this radio as part of the two radio package to use for comms while on RV trips with my wife in areas without cell coverage. I have read a number of reviews about people having issues with programming these radios via PC and not being able to change the comm port in the software.

TIP: To change the com port in the programming software, right-click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". This will allow you to change the com port for the programming cable. Once the com port is set correctly, you can launch the programming software normally after that and it will load with the com port setting you selected.

I like the styling and design of it, and the menu system is simple to operate. I can't get my FTDI Cable for my KGUV8H to work on programming it and understand there needs to be a different programming cable used. (Cannot assign USB Com Port 3 to the software furnished by you with my FTDI cable) Many people think they are toys, but including a flashlight and FM radio would be great for Emergencies. Being older with poorer eyesight, I find flashlights on my HT's VERY handy, and FM radio in emergencies for public service announcements would be a big plus. I'm keeping it for my wife, but I will probably buy the KG935G or similar for me. Good radio and with the mentioned additions it would be a great radio.

The radio has a very robust feel. But beware the screen isn't a tough as the case would lead you to belive. Mine broke during first trip in a suitcase. Even before I removed the plastic protective film from the screen.

This is a decent radio. It has a few shortcomings however. There is a nasty EOT static for other radios to "enjoy" . If your just walking around or driving probably no big deal, but while hunting in the quiet you don't want this, very disturbing, your going to get the attention of anything around. The PTT is far to easy to depress requiring almost no pressure, It's constantly being accidentally hit like on your belt with an overcoat or in a coat pocket, just the coat brushing against it causes transmit. is is probably my biggest complaint with this radio. It does put out it's rated power, receiver is good albeit a little on the "quiet" side.

Simple interface to customize. Easy enough for my family to use. However the on/off volume knob is slightly canted.

This handheld is probably the best of both worlds when it comes to simple operation signal quality and range. Pair this with a nagoya NA-771G and you have one of the best handhelds out there. With this setup I'm able to reach a *repeater* 15 miles away, over hill and over dale, from my couch, and come out crystal clear. I love this thing.

These worked great for my trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park to communicate with my family in other vehicles as we met and traveled the Old Fall River Road.

The radio seems to be good quality and works very well with my other radio. I wanted this for travel where cell service is not available. It works with FRS too, so the kids can join in on the conversations. Very good HT.

Not that much better than a $30 radio. If I bought from Amazon I’d probably return it.

Blows away the cheap Baofeng Radios. Solid transmit and receive. Built for heavy use. I will buy more.

This is the second 905G I have purchased they are well made and work well. The second one does have a bind when turning the channel knob but does not affect it at all. Just not as smooth as first radio.

Great radio. We use these on the farm in very harsh conditions. So far, these radios have held up well. Only issue we have had is the PTT is very sensitive. Would be better if the PTT was a bit heavier push to activate.

BTWR folks were absolutely great to work with and quick to ship. 3 things radio lacks. 1. the base for charging is cumbersome and would be nice to see battery utilize a usb-C cord so could use in vehicle while charging. 2. Manual is not great, leaves out a couple steps in programming which I figured out based on my Midland programming. I am an expert on manuals cause I am old and not a techy type. 3. It would be nice if the headset jacks had a washer or adapter to maintain some degree of radio waterproofness with headset plugged in.
Overall very happy with radio. Thought about a four star but wanted to get some attention to my comments.

I bought 2 . Very easy to use and it feels like a solid radio

Upgraded from a Baofeng UV5R as I wanted a pure GMRS walkie. The Wouxun 905-G is a great improvement over the Baofeng. Range of the Wouxun is perhaps a little better than the Baofeng but the big difference is in receiver sensitivity. Huge difference! I was so pleased with the 905-G performance that I ordered another one for my son. Twowayradio's shipped the same day I ordered and I received my radio within a week. Great customer service!

I am not new to communication equipment, a long time CB enthusiast going back to the late 60’ and thru the 90’s..
This is the best GMRS I have handled, nothing on this is cheaply manufactured. Looking forward to hooking up with a group with repeater sites. Now waiting for a replacement antenna the Nagoya NA-771 15.6-Inch Whip VHF/UHF (144/430Mhz) Antenna apparently out of stock for awhile.

Very quick shipping, seems to be a very good radio as referred by friends. Easy to use, I am new not experienced I did not have a problem with programming I read all instructions and You tube videos, somtimes twice and got it. Very satisfied at this point.

New to GMRS but not to radios. This is the perfect beginner radio that i can hand to my kids and they can use but powerful enough with PC programming that i can customize and extend the functionality. I also encountered the stiff knobs as reported by others. I'm not worried as im sure they will "break in" with use. All in all a good solid radio with a good ecosystem of accessories.

The 905 has the same great performance as the 805, but with a better build quality and larger battery. Yes, it is heavier than the 805, but it is well worth the extra $20,00.(Although, if the 805 prepper kit is avail, it will give you more value for your money).

Shipped on 9/23 and received 2nd day priority mail on 10/15. Thanks USPS!!! Now the actual review. Putting in the hand strap was a little difficult, but got it done. Unlike some past struggles putting on the belt clip on Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, etc. I finally got smart and removed the battery first. That made it an easy task. In the menu, the up and down arrows seem to be reversed. However, you can also move the selection by the knob at the top. What I don't like is the stiffness of the volume knob and that there is no indication of how loud you have it set to. The is an indicator that shows power output and received signal strength. It would be a simple change to have that also show the volume setting.

The radio is everything it is advertised. A solid radio and one well suited for experienced radio operators. BuyTwoWayRadio is top notch in all dealings.

Solid radio, easy to use. Built like a tank. Performance is much better than basic FRS talkies. So far I am happy.

With the large number of repeaters in my area, I found the GMRS-V1 limiting, and the UV-5G lacking in QC. Picked one of these, and wish I'd started with it.

Big and beefy, very sold-feeling and I don't doubt the IP rating is somewhat close to true. A lot of nice features over cheaper models, namely a big, grouped channel bank with 7-character names; group scanning; a simple interface; and my favorite, a channel knob. Very easy to hand to someone without scaring them with a full keypad. Button programming is more useful than the 805G.

Drawbacks are the software; Windows-only and difficult to move channels around–you have to re-enter each manually, and I hope this gets CHIRP support soon. No way to add channels on the fly from the keypad.. And the size: it's barely pocketable, and about the size of a smaller business radio.

So far, hitting all of my nearby repeaters with the stock antenna and excellent range in an urban area. I ended up picking up the bigger 935G for myself, and the 805 as well as a smaller, more pocketable unit.

Very good radio only thing i disliked was I could not import the code plug from my KG-805G. Customer service was excellent.

Very solid, well built radio. There is some heft to this unit. It is very simple to operate. The volume knob is very stiff. That might actually be a good thing as you won't spin it by accident.
The software is very clunky and has to be run in Win8 compatibility mode. They don't tell you this either.

Overall this is a good radio. There are some issues though:

- the software is garbage, although I was able to get it running easily in a Windows VM on a Mac, and it does get the job done
- I bought two radios, one has a very pleasant to turn channel selector, the other is sticky and doesn't have a good feel when turning it
- the radios came with RPT-15 incorrectly programmed, doing a reset on the radio fixes the programming, but the software has the wrong value embedded, so re-program with care

I’m very leery of anything Chinese, but I made this exception because of a review by not-a-rubicon. I’m glad I did. I bought this radio (two of them, actually) to communicate with my wife when we’re out ATVing. They work as advertised. Now, if someone could just put up a decent repeater around here life would be grand!

This radio is just too easy. Takes a little time/effort to navigate through the menu and options - but that's true of all handhelds.

If notarubicon said it is good, that is all I need to know. I may use it a couple of times hunting but I have it just in case.
I will likely get another.

Bought this to go in my SHTF bag due to it being water and dust proof. I can't find any faults with the radio. The volume is fine for what I need it for. Plan on buying another one soon.

My first venture into GMRS but, as a HAM with over 25 HT's and over 35 years in that hobby I decided to check out GMRS. After reading reviews I bought the 905g and am happy to say this rig is built very well, easy to use and program, sounds great, hears great and looks good too. Well worth the money.

Simple to operate, adding tones for repeaters, have 3 now one at 20 miles one at 25 & one at 39 miles can hit all 3 with nagoya 771 antennas purchased the 3200mah battery last for days scanning would buy again . Good radio stock antenna ok radio comes alive with a nagoya 771 , radio to radio 5 miles about as good as one could expect in a rural areas with 100 to 150 ft tall trees .Excellent service from 2 way radio will buy again

AFTER TRYING A KG-805G I REPLACED FOUR KG-805G'S WITH KG-905'S. THE SUBSTANTIALLY BETTER DISPLAY WAS THE KEY FEATURE FOR ME!

Watching YouTube videos, the KG 805 was the best radio for GMRS. Unfortunately the 805 was on backorder, and its slightly more expensive newer cousin the 905 was available. The radio came very quickly from buytwowayradios.com. It was set up and ready to use right out of the box. It feels solid and well made. All the reviews were correct. BUT... the volume leaves much to be desired. I purchased the radio to use in my Jeep on trails with others using GMRS. Anyone who has ever been in a Jeep knows it isn't the quietest vehicle, let alone playing music on the radio.

The volume on the KG 905 at it's loudest setting is still half as loud as a cheap $30 Baofeng, which isn't legal for GMRS. So my solution is to use the Baofeng to listen and the KG 905 to transmit. I just won't be able to hear an incoming message over the Jeep with the doors off and radio going on the KG 905.

This radio does everything it says it does in the advertising. No disappointments with this radio. For the price this radio is perfect for a wide range of applications.

This is great radio. I was in the market for my first GMRS radio and after a bunch of research I decided to get this one. It's a great radio that feels solid and well built. Programming is easy and the manual is easy to read and understand. The ordering process was easy and delivery was quick.

Super excellent designed, radios. I carried 2 way walkie talkie for 30 yrs. as a tradesman for the federal gov. so I can explain some things I really know are good to have.. Here goes.

Strong Li-ion 2800mAh battery and nice belt clip cause I always carried it hooked on my side pants pocket. User can program configure radio functions, buttons etc... as needed for their needs via cable & p.c. app. Download programming app. right from web site! Superheterodyne receiver to be

Cons:
Would like to see a glass display face instead of plastic which scratch or chemical exposures fogging display.
Wish side buttons PTT were recessed, too easy to hit mistakenly.
Wish PF1 & PF2 left side buttons were recessed to avoid being bumped but this is easy to fix via programming button function assignment from software app.

Fantastic radio there's no way you can beat it but I don't like about it is a fact that the different charging system between the 805 and a 905 is totally different and I thought maybe I could use the two together cuz I haven't 8:05 g and I purchase a 905 Jeep it's a charging systems are different therefore I need to carry everything with me in my Jeep or my motorhome in order to charge the damn radios

I received two radios as ordered. They were in a secure package and had no damage. They worked right out of the box. Also easy to use and learn. Great product!

I own a 805g that I gave to my daughter in college. The 805 does most everything I need but simple enough to hand to a family member . I purchased the 905 for myself and wow! The quality is a couple notches above the 805, does more and I am happy with it.

yes, you can buy much cheaper GMRS radios, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. this is a top-notch, programmable, solidly built GMRS radio with almost all of the features you can think of. my only complaint, is that it's much more difficult to operate and program strictly on the unit itself. save yourself the hassle, get a programming cable, download the free application, and just use that.

construction is good, solid feel in the hand, slightly on the heavy side. not sure how durable it is, if it would survive a drop from waist high onto rocks and bounce a little down a hill. i treat it as 'water resistant' and definitely try to keep it out of any contact with liquids.

wish there was a usb charging cable for this, can't seem to find one. having to lug the dock around is a pain, probably due to battery size.

i wouldn't buy one of these and hand it to the kids, but it's good for a responsible adult while they get the cheap ones.

Just getting into gmmrs bought this after many nights researching a good hand held radio. This radio is fantastic its the perfect size, it's built solid, and it works great!

Good, solid built radio. Can transmit long distance. Kind of complicated to use. Wish I had access to a manual that would help me learn all the functions of this radio.

These are SO worth $120 bucks a piece. The fit and finish on these are every bit as good as a radio at 2 or 3 times the price. The included documentation is great (if you need it). Range is great (terrain dependent, of course). Very logical firmware...simple to use. Six stars for this GRMS radio.

After a short 6 week wait I could not wait to get it open. Worked perfectly right out of the box. I did find one cliche the volume was not what I expected. After reading up on the do,s and don'ts I found it was only the the chinglish announcer. Thank you buytwowayradios.

The radios works great, and it's very easy to get a repeater programmed via the front panel. The audio is very good. I've ordered the Nagoya antennas and hopefully they will make the radios even better. I'd buy these again.

Just getting into GMRS and wanted a real high quality hand held. And I think the 905 does a great job. Still need to find some more operators in my area to actually get this unit up to its full potential. The wait time from when you put in the order to eggshells you actually get your product is way to long. Hence the 4 stars.

Purchased 2 radios. One of them works as advertised.
Out of the box, the other was unusable. When PTT is pushed and released, radio won't stop transmitting, and all buttons except on off knob fail to function. This occurred 100% of the time. Bad radio sent back to BTWR for replacement. Can not reccomend this radio until software problem resolved.

I purchased the KG905G on April 19, 2021 and recieved June 11,2021. Pretty aggravating, but great radio. It seems to be commercial quality, has great features and good sound quality. I do wish that it had the 3 color display and the ability to monitor NOAA weather channels.

The Radio sound great! Paired with a Nagoya 771G is is an amazing listener and has no problem getting into the repeater 28 miles line of sight. The advanced repeater functions are great and just what I needed enjoy all of the repeaters throughout the Valley of the Sun. This is my 2nd Woxoun (KG1000G and KG905G) GMRS Radio purchased from Buytwowayradio.com. I am very pleased and will return for my next!

Took a little over 2 months after purchase to receive it because of the current pandemic as well as supply and demand. I was originally going to invest in the Wouxun KG-805G but decided to with the KG-905G instead. Terrific radio and easy to program by hand. Absolutely love it! From my experience, it's currently the best GMRS radio on the market!

Grate radio, solid and hefty feel. Easy to program.

I am newer to the Wouxun line of products, and this is my first quality HT with repeater capability. I've carried it around everywhere and get great reception along with great transmitting.

I also own a KG-1000G, and have received and used it for some time. Having experience with the KG1000 software, I find the 905 software to be considerably inferior. Every modification must be hand keyed, with no ability to copy/pasta. It would be nice if the software maker would build a single platform that would program multiple radios, so the frequency sets can be copied across to other radios. Or simply add the copy/pasta functionality to the existing 905G software.

Recently purchased two Wouxun KG-905G and couldn't have been easier! Notified me when in stock and automatically processed my order. Radios were received quickly and packaged well. Wish all mail order was this easy!

This radio has exceeded my expectations, it has the same solid build quality feel as the Motorola and Kenwood commercial radios we used when I was working. BTWR is outstanding in customer service, they will be my go-to source as I venture deeper into GMRS radio.

The sensitivity of this radio is excellent with the stock antenna. I've received repeaters from 50-75 miles away without any problems. Battery life so far has been very good. Voice reports are great as well. The customer service from BTWR is top notch. You couldn't ask for any better. I highly recommend them.

This thing is a tank, it feels like a business-grade radio. Sounds great, menu system is decent, it's water resistant, what more do you want. Blows the KG-805 out of the water. Programming software for Windows is a little fussy, but manageable. My only wish would be for a multi-color backlight option.
