Wouxun KG-805M MURS Two Way Radio

very affordable (I purchased bulk quantity). very simple and usable for our needs on a farm.

Only complaint - both my units the back battery cover would not fully close and left a visible gap.

Radios work well. Shipping was fast. Can't ask for any better.

I have been wanting to get one of these for some time. So, when they went on sale I finally bought one. The same day that I received it, I order a second one.
Both my wife and I are licensed hams, but MURS is nice for short range comms without needing to use callsigns.
Is this radio perfect? No. But, it will do what I want. (See the cons for what I don't like but have a workaround.)

Pros:
FCC approved specifically for MURS use. (This is great if you are assisting with agencies that require the "correct" equipment.)
Single band - better filters and antenna since it is designed for one band.
Front panel programming of CTCSS/DCS tones and channel names. (See cons for limitations.)
128 memory channels for MURS or other VHF (receive only) frequencies.
Weather channels can be programmed in memory.
High capacity battery, AA battery case, 12 volt battery eliminator available. (Works with all of the accessories that we already have for our KG-UVD1P radios.)
The charging cradle works with the Wouxun USB charging cord.
The batteries last for longer than other brands. (The original batteries from our KG-UVD1P from 2011 still work. Some other brands of radios I have that I have bought more recently have batteries that won't hold a charge.)

Cons:
The first 5 channels have the 5 MURS frequencies already programmed. I believe this may be a FCC requirement. The problem is, Wouxun has them in a "non standard" order. They have the 154 MHz frequencies as channels 1 and 2. Most places have them as 4 and 5 with the 151 MHz frequencies as 1 to 3. Not a problem, but it looks like you can't change them. So, I just changed the channel names to conform with the "standard" and removed them from the scan list.
The second problem is you can change the tones and name of EXISTING channels from the front panel, but you can not ADD channels or change frequencies except from a computer. The workaround I used is to program the 5 frequencies (without tones) in memory channels 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. I added the same frequencies in other channels (for example frequency 1 in channels 11, 12, 13, etc.). From the front panel I can modify the tones and channel names. This lets me have the option to program the same frequency with and without tones for my needs. In addition I can change these settings in the field to match the settings of others.

Now to get Wouxun to release a battery with USB-C charging. We already have the USB-C charging with our KG-UV9D Plus radios and the are great.

Radio works great here in our mountainous terrain but the clip is weak and not tight and the radio is easy to lose.

Good radio, work as expected

So I already have two of these MURS radios.. this is an additional unit.. I find them very good especially in the county.. my only complaint and this isn't because of the brand, I wish they had more power and channels...

These are solid radios. Great sound and durability. My only complaint is that for some reason the first 5 channels start with MURS 4 and 5 and it wont let me change that around, so if you are buying these to use with other MURS radios, the channels wont line up in the same order. But other than that, I love these.

Have 3 KG805M units. Two of the discontinued "Basic"units and one non-basic. The Basic units were perfect for us as we use computer programming and the extra money for the non-Basic is just a waste for us. It would also be nice to have a USB C connector and dump the base stand. I have a competitive brand that has this feature. Allows easy charging from a car and only requires a short USB cable to charge anywhere. Many of our club members will choose a MURS radio that works well at a bit over 1/4 the price and has the easy charging. Love the integrity, quality and service of Buy Two Way Radios. Keep up the good work.

These are good radios. They perform as a 2w VHF should. With a mag-mount on my roof, I was able to talk clear for extended distances. The stock antenna is good for handheld use (about like a good 2w GMRS unit...)

I have one issue, however. The unit I got had CTCSS programmed at the lowest frequency on all 5 channels. These should be off by default.

I also had to adjust a bit because the channels are set up with the higher frequencies on the lower channel numbers - but there is no standard for that.

This compnay has been great to work with. I ordered 6 radios and they tested well to about 1-1/2 miles through the woods so far. For obstructed communication, VHF works better than UHF at the same wattage power.

I purchased (4) of these units and have waited a few weeks before writing this review in order to make sure I have performed adequate testing before forming an opinion. That being said, I find the Wouxun KG-805M to be the perfect fit for most hunting, hiking, and camping needs. In the real world, I have been getting consistent, reliable communication between the handhelds out to 2 miles plus in wooded, mountainous terrain. This is in stark contrast to all of the FRS/GMRS handhelds I have tried in the past which flamed out at .25 mi. max. I cannot recommend the MURS frequencies highly enough, and I really cannot understand why MURS radios are not more popular. If you buy the programming cable for this radio, you can add nearly endless channel/privacy code variations for uninterrupted communication. The radio has 128 available channels but ships from the factory with only (5) of them open. I have also added the seven NOAA frequencies to my units which make these radios perfect for everything outdoors!
