  13. Solid Radio review by Flatland slim on 11/24/2014

Range is solid compared to many competitors. I use it in difficult steep mountainous terrain of coniferous forests and rocky peaks with deep valleys an difficult terrain. No low power radio works well out here but these have been the best. Right up until it came unclipped and fell in deep brush somewhere over about a mile of impossible terrain. I'd buy it in bright orange next time and need a lanyard.

A pity that you cannot purchase one radio on its own. As I purchased 2 sets and had one faulty, it was not worth sending back from New Zealand for repair even it was still under warrantee, so I had to purchase another pair.

  24. PLEASE save your money and do not buy... review by Justin on 9/3/2012
    Rating

We bought these radios as emergency / camping radios because of the advertised 36 mile range (ideal). I expected the range to be reduced under real world conditions, but the amount of range loss was astonishing. The most we have gotten out of these, on high power, was 1.3 miles, in direct line of sight, over open field.. And even then, the reception was horrible.. Put any buildings between you (we tested it in our surburban residential neighborhood) and the range drops to 3/4 of a mile AT BEST.. Again, this was on HIGH power transmission... Dont waste your money on these expensive TOYS, because thats all they are....

  25. Range Claim is a Joke! review by Bob on 7/26/2012

I have held an Amateur Radio Extra Class license since 1965, and have been building, collecting, repairing, and testing radios for almost 50 years. I was an avid CB'er back in the 60's and 70's, and have owned several dozen handheld amateur and cb radios over the years. The gxt1000vp4 and gxt1050vp4 (i own 2 1050's)are essentially the same radio, the only differences being the camo covering and 5 animal calls on the 1050. They share the same manual. These radios are very well made, both mechanically and electrically, and although not totally waterproof (buy the mil spec $150 model if you require real waterproofing), they are totally gasketed around both the battery compartment, as well as between the two halfs (i've broken them down completely), so they should be splashproof++. I looked up the specs on the rf power transistor located on the main board, and as far as i can tell, it is only rated at 3 watts output, so I don't see how midland can claim 5 watts output. These type radios, by law, must have a fixed antenna, to hopefully preclude anyone from easily attaching a linear amp to them, or an external high gain antenna, so I have not yet been able to hook them up to my test equipment to verify their real output power. what I have done, however, is see how far they could tramsmit in high power mode. living in florida, it's easy to find 2-3 miles of straight, flat beach, so another ham and I measured out 1/2/3 miles distance on a parallel beachside road, and then hit the beach, cell phones in hand as backup. Unfortunately, our results were very disappointing. With high power selected, running on 4 new alkaline batteries, in normal mode, we could not get a squelch break from either rig until we closed to within 1.4 miles from one another!! And then, the signal/modulation wasn't that good, broken, with static... very disapointing! So, believe what you will of the manufacturers bogus milage claims, but in my opinion, these rigs don't even hold a candle to even basic 5 watt CB radios (27mhz am/ssb)... Not recommended.

This is the second set that I have purchased these for a friend. The operating instructions could be a little more user friendly (step by step), as we are hunters and unfamiliar with technical terms. (Not the sharpest knife in the drawer so to speak). I hope that this is helpful.

  28. Works Great, but Specs are Misleading review by Bill on 2/13/2012
    Rating

I bought four of these radios to communicate with my family. I have been testing them for a month and find them to work well, however, I have discovered some drawbacks to 'features'. One of the reasons I bought this radio instead of others was because it had 50 channels, compared to only 22 offered by the competition. I thought this would give me clear talking on almost private channels while everyone else was stuck sharing 22 channels. 50 channels claimed is the biggest drawback of this radio. The reality is that it only has 22 channels, just like any other GMRS/FRS radio, and that the additional 28 channels are simply the first 22 AGAIN, but pre-programmed with CTCSS/DCS codes. For example, channel 23 is actually channel 1 paired with CTCSS code 38. The reason I find this to be a drawback is because it essentially makes the scanning feature useless. Since the scanner scans through all 50 channels, the time it spends scanning channels 23-50 is wasted, and channels 1-22 with no codes is scanned for only a fraction of the total scanning time. I noticed the top Uniden has a feature not present on the Midlands, called auto channel change. I wish I had this. This is where, after scanning, the lead user of a group of Uniden users can change the channel on ALL the groups hand sets right from his hand set, when he finds a clearer channel! The only disadvantage of the Uniden's is that I think they put out less power. But it has been my experience on my Midlands that the HI setting eats up the batteries quick anyway, and doesn't gain any significantly greater distance. That being said, I am tempted to look at the Trisquare radios too. Good Luck

used the radios elk hunting in the Pacific NW. Rugged country, heavy forests. Found the radios worked well. Disregard all boasts about range. You are never in "ideal" country for max range. However, it met my requirements of several miles in tough up/down heavy cover country.Keep the instruction manual with you, programing and changes are not intuitive, at least at first. The manual makes it easy!

I HAVE TESTED THESE MIDLAND RADIOS AT DISTANCES OF ABOUT 5 MILES AND HAVE RECEIVED CRISP AND CLEAR TRANSMISSIONS. THE UNITS ARE EASY TO USE AND THEY ARE AS THEY APPEAR IN THE PICTURE. THE CAMO FEATURES LOOK COOL. I TOOK IT TO WORK STRAIGHT OUT OF THE BOX WITHOUT CHARGING IT FOR THE INICIAL 24 HOURS AND IT GAVE ME A GOOD 8 HOUR RUN TIME. THE ANIMAL CALLS SOUNDS OK (THE WOLF CALL SOUNDS MORE REALISTIC MAKING IT MY FAVORITE). I HAVN'T DROPPED IT YET AND AIN'T PLANNING TO SO I DON'T KNOW HOW TUFF IT REALLY IS. I USE 125 READING GLASSES AND THE L.E.D. DISPLAY IS SO CLEAR THAT I CAN READ IT WITHOUT MY READING GLASSES. THIS OF COARSE IT GREAT IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS WHERE YOU CAN'T FIND YOUR GLASSES ON TIME. I'M STILL TESTING THESE UNIT OUT. AS A SURVIVALIST (BY HOBBY), I GIVE THESE RADIOS A 4 STAR RATING.

Can't believe how well these work in thick scrub and steep valleys. I have used some powerfull radios in the past and they usually cut out halfway down a regular hill I hunt when my mates stay up the top, these worked all the way down into the creek at the bottom. Impressive.

I purchased these radios to use while rideing quads , use with head sets vioce operated , they are not good for that use. they pick up the engine noise and turn on the mike to transmit, and all that can be heard is engine,, this happens on any level of sensivity, other wise seem to work good..
